5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for taking pictures of distant objects, April 10, 2012

This review is from: Canon EFS 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS II Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras (Accessory)
I had owned Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black) for about a year and I have discovered that the standard lens that it came with was rather limited in terms of what sorts of shots I was able to take, especially when it came to taking pictures of distant object. I was not willing to spend too much money on any of the higher end professional or prosumer lenses. I needed something that would take decent photographs under the normal shooting condition, something comparable to the performance of the standard lens. I also wanted image stabilization, as I had come to appreciate how important it was for making low-blur shots. This Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS II telephoto zoom lens fit that description perfectly, and over the time I've owned iy it has met or exceeded all of my... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the price, decent performance, April 11, 2012
This review is from: Canon EFS 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS II Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras (Accessory)
I'm a beginning photographer and now that I've had a chance to use this lens at a few events I wanted to leave a review with my thoughts, particularly comparing it to the EF-S 18-55 IS II (kit lens for the T3i).

Pros:
- First and foremost, the price. This lens is capable of getting great shots given the right circumstances, and for under $200 it's great.
- Nice long zoom compared to the standard kit lens
- IS is always nice

Cons:
- Focus issues occasionally in lower light. Sometimes just won't focus, or takes a long time to focus. Haven't noticed this issue at all with the 18-55.
- Stiff zoom. Hard to get quick, precise changes in zoom during fast action and during a long event the zooming actually gets a little tiring (18-55 has a much smoother zoom).
- Overall noisier than the 18-55, not terrible, but definitely louder.
- Photos don't seem as clear as the 18-55. Could be a lot of issues, more camera shake inherent to longer... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice lens!, March 24, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Canon EFS 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS II Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras (Accessory)
Just got my new lens. Already been playing with it. Nice! I chose this one because it is a Canon lens and is an EFS (stabilization). Seems to work fine!

I also went with Canon over some third party brands. I could have paid a few dollars less, but I figure I should get a quality lens from Canon.

Doesn't seem to add much weight to the camera and I can hold it pretty steady with no problems. The AF worked fine until I got inside and tried to zoom up on my dog. It didn't want to lock in; the 28-55mm kit lens that came with my T2i doesn't do that. I am sure it was because I was over 10 feet away from Buster in not real good light. I just flipped it to MF and he was in focus, so I snapped the shot. Came out just fine.

No problems purchasing through Amazon. It arrived two days early! This same lens was about $30 more direct from Canon, so I think I got a decent deal.

I am planning to give this lens a workout on an upcoming trip to San Diego. I am... Read more
